FAQ

46 questions small business owners ask us about websites, search, AI and marketing, answered plainly.

Always-on marketing

What is always-on marketing?
Always-on marketing is your website working as the centre of your marketing rather than a standalone brochure. GoClearcut connects the website to Google and AI search, content, social, email and reporting, so each part supports the others every week. Human strategy decides the priorities, and technology handles more of the repetitive work, so your marketing keeps moving while you run the business.
How is always-on marketing different from a normal website?
A normal website is usually finished at launch and then left alone. A website with always-on marketing keeps working after launch: it is set up to be found in Google and AI search, it connects to your Google Business Profile, content, email and ads, and it measures what is working. The website is still the centre, it just stops working in isolation.
What is GoClearcut?
GoClearcut is a Melbourne-based digital growth partner that builds websites with always-on marketing for ambitious Australian small businesses. It started in 2001 as Clearcut Marketing and has evolved through every major shift in digital since. Today GoClearcut connects Google, AI search, content, social and email to the website, with human strategy directing the technology.
Who is always-on marketing for?
It suits Australian small and medium businesses, roughly 1 to 50 staff, that are good at what they do but have outgrown a DIY website and scattered marketing. Typical clients include local retailers and showrooms, trades and home services, health practitioners, professional services, boutique eCommerce and member associations. Most don't have an in-house marketer and want a partner who stays after launch.
Has GoClearcut built this before?
Yes. Floorworld Camberwell was our first always-on build: a custom website connected to search, content, Google Ads reporting and a bank of clear answers to customers' questions, with an AI assistant that drafts content for the team to approve. You can read how it was approached in the Floorworld Camberwell case study.

Websites

What platform does GoClearcut build websites on?
New GoClearcut websites are custom built and hosted on Vercel. That gives us fast load times, full control over how Google and AI search read the site, and a setup our AI drafting tools can work with directly. GoClearcut still supports existing clients on Squarespace, and can move them onto a custom website when the timing suits.
What is the difference between a Website Build and a Website + Marketing Build?
A Website Build (from $2,500 inc GST) is a fast custom website, set up to be found on Google and in AI search, with your Google Business Profile connected and enquiries tracked. A Website + Marketing Build (from $4,500 inc GST) adds a content plan and first posts, email set-up, bookings or CRM, automations and a 90-day results report. Both come with a monthly Care plan.
What does it mean to set a website up for AI search?
It means building the site so AI tools such as ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and Perplexity can understand it, trust it and quote it. In practice that means clear page structure, pages that answer customers' questions directly, accurate business details, behind-the-scenes labels that tell search engines what each page is about, and fast performance. Good SEO foundations and AI search mostly overlap.
Can GoClearcut build an online store?
Yes. eCommerce is part of GoClearcut's experience, including years of building Shopify and Squarespace stores. The right setup depends on how many products you sell and how you run fulfilment, so it is scoped after your Snapshot or a discovery call rather than priced from a template.
Can you redesign my existing website?
Yes. Most GoClearcut builds replace an existing site. We keep what is working, including your search rankings, by mapping every old page address to its new home with permanent (301) redirects before launch. The free Snapshot is a good first step because it shows what the current site is doing well and what is holding it back.

SEO

What does SEO involve for a small business?
SEO (search engine optimisation) is making it easy for Google to understand what you do, where you do it and why you are a good choice. For a small business that means a well-structured website, useful content that answers real questions, an accurate Google Business Profile, consistent business details across the web, genuine reviews and a site that loads quickly on mobile.
Can you guarantee first-page rankings?
No, and you should be wary of anyone who does. Nobody controls Google's rankings. What GoClearcut can do is fix the things that hold a site back, build genuinely useful content, measure what is working in Search Console and Analytics, and keep improving month by month. We report plainly on what changed so you can see progress for yourself.
How long does SEO take to work?
It depends on where you start. Google Business Profile improvements can show results within weeks. Website and content changes typically take one to three months to be picked up and gain traction. Visibility in AI search tends to build over three to six months. We would rather set honest expectations than overpromise.
Do you only do SEO for Melbourne businesses?
No. GoClearcut is based in Camberwell, Melbourne, and works with businesses across Australia. Local SEO for a business that serves a specific area works the same way wherever you are: a strong Google Business Profile, pages that clearly describe your services and service area, and consistent details across the web.

Google Business Profile

Why does my Google Business Profile matter so much?
For local searches, your Google Business Profile is often the first thing people see, before your website. It shows your hours, location, reviews, photos and a direct call button, and Google uses it to decide who appears in the map results. AI tools also draw on it. Keeping it complete, accurate and active is one of the highest-value jobs for a local business.
Can GoClearcut manage my Google Business Profile?
Yes. It is part of Momentum: we keep it growing. Google Business posts are drafted each week and reviewed before they go live, alongside checks that your details, categories and services are accurate. Making sure your business details match exactly across your website, Google and directories is usually one of the first fixes we make.
How do I get more Google reviews?
Ask, and make it easy. The businesses that collect the most reviews ask at the right moment (just after a job goes well) and send a direct link so the customer can leave a review in a few taps. GoClearcut helps set up a simple, repeatable review request as part of your plan. Genuine reviews only: never buy or incentivise them.

Content and social

Will AI-written content sound generic?
Not the way GoClearcut works. Your own voice, customers and priorities lead, and AI does the repetitive drafting work. Every blog post, social caption and Google Business post is reviewed by a person before it goes live. The aim is content that sounds like you on a good day, published consistently, without you having to find the time to write it.
What content does GoClearcut produce on a Momentum plan?
Momentum: we keep it growing. The plan includes AI-drafted content (blog posts, social posts and Google Business posts) that Jo reviews before anything is published. Each piece is written to be useful to your customers and to help you be found in Google and AI search. The exact mix is set from your goals and adjusted from what the monthly report shows is working.
Do I get to approve content before it goes live?
Yes. The rule is simple: AI drafts, a person decides. Nothing is published automatically. Jo reviews every piece first, and you see and approve content before it goes out. Many clients find it easiest to approve a batch at a time, but that is your call.

Pricing and process

How much does GoClearcut cost?
The AI Marketing Snapshot is free. A Website Build starts from $2,500 and a Website + Marketing Build from $4,500, each with a monthly plan. Monthly plans start from $149/month for Care, $599/month for Momentum and $1,200/month for Momentum + Ads (plus ad spend). Support packs are $250 for 2 hours or $500 for 5 hours. All prices are inc GST. See the pricing page.
Do I need a monthly plan with my build?
Yes. Every build comes with a Care plan from $149 a month inc GST, which covers hosting, security, updates, backups, small content edits and a monthly health check. Your website is custom built, so Care is what keeps it running safely. If you'd like us to keep growing it with content, search improvements and reporting, choose Momentum instead, which includes everything in Care. Plans run on 12-month terms.
Do your prices include GST?
Yes. Every GoClearcut price is in Australian dollars and includes GST. Published prices are "from" prices: the exact figure depends on the size of the job, and you get a clear quote after your Snapshot or discovery call, before any work starts.
Is there a minimum term on monthly plans?
Yes. Care, Momentum and Momentum + Ads run on 12-month terms, billed monthly, and renew every 12 months. We remind you 30 days before your renewal date, so you can renew, change plan or finish. Support packs and the Snapshot have no term. The full wording is in our terms.
Is ad spend included in Momentum + Ads?
No. Momentum + Ads covers the management of your Google Ads (strategy, setup, optimisation and weekly reporting), from $1,200/month inc GST. The ad spend itself is paid directly to Google or Meta from your own account, so you always see exactly what is being spent and keep full control of the budget.
How does working with GoClearcut start?
It starts with the free AI Marketing Snapshot. We score your business across five areas and show you what to fix first. Then we talk it through on a discovery call and recommend the right next step, whether that is a build, a monthly plan or a support pack. From there the process runs: assess, prioritise, build, run and improve.
What if I'm not ready for a monthly plan?
Start with a support pack. The 2-Hour Support Pack ($250 inc GST) is hands-on help to tackle your number one priority, and the 5-Hour Support Pack ($500 inc GST) works through your top two to three. They have no term, and they are a practical way to act on your Snapshot results.

Working with GoClearcut

Who will I actually work with?
You work directly with Jo McAuliffe, GoClearcut's founder, and a small, experienced team. There is no account manager layer between you and the person making decisions about your marketing. Our hours are Monday to Thursday, 10am to 3pm, and we reply within one business day.
Do you work with businesses outside Melbourne?
Yes. GoClearcut is based at 379 Camberwell Road, Camberwell, and works with businesses across Australia. Snapshots, discovery calls, builds and monthly plans all work remotely, so location is no barrier.
How is GoClearcut different from a web design agency?
Most agencies build a site and move on, or manage one channel in isolation. GoClearcut builds the website as the centre of a connected system and stays to run it: search, content, Google Business, ads, automation and measurement working together. You get human strategy from someone who has been doing this since 2001, and technology that does more of the repetitive work.
Do I need to understand the technology?
No. That is our job. You focus on running your business; we handle the platforms, tools and technical detail. Reporting is in plain English, and you make the decisions that matter. You approve, we do.
How long has GoClearcut been around?
GoClearcut has been working with Australian businesses since 2001, when it started as Clearcut Marketing. Founder Jo McAuliffe co-founded MiStable, a marketing platform for Australia's thoroughbred racing industry, which was acquired in 2015. That platform experience shaped what GoClearcut builds today. The AI Marketing Snapshot

What is the AI Marketing Snapshot?
The AI Marketing Snapshot is a free assessment of your business across five areas, scored out of 100: your website and online presence, Google Business Profile, AI search visibility, content and social media, and email and lead nurture. It shows what is working, what is holding you back and what to fix first, in plain English. There is no payment step and no obligation.
Is the Snapshot really free?
Yes. The AI Marketing Snapshot is free, with no payment step and no obligation. It is how GoClearcut starts every new relationship, because it gives both of us a clear, honest picture before any money is spent. If you decide to go further, you will already know what needs doing and in what order.
What do I need to provide for a Snapshot?
Just the basics: your name, business name, email and website address. It helps if you also share your Google Business Profile link, your social media handles, whether you run paid ads or send newsletters, and your biggest marketing frustration. The whole form takes about three minutes.
What happens after I get my Snapshot?
You get your report by email, and we offer a discovery call to talk it through. On the call we answer your questions and recommend a practical next step, whether that is a build, a monthly plan, a support pack or simply the fixes you can make yourself. There is no pressure either way.

Technical and ownership

Who owns my website and accounts?
You do. Your domain, Google Business Profile, Analytics and Search Console should always be in your business's name, with GoClearcut given delegated access to do the work. That way you are never locked out of your own digital assets.
Is hosting included?
Yes, on a Care plan or above. Care covers hosting, security, updates, backups, small content edits and a monthly health check, from $149/month inc GST. It is the simplest way to make sure your site stays fast, secure and up to date after launch.
I'm on Squarespace. Do I have to move?
No. GoClearcut still supports clients on Squarespace, and many have been with us for years. When moving to a custom website with always-on marketing makes sense for your business, we will talk it through with you and plan the move carefully, including redirects so you keep your search rankings.
Will moving my website affect my email?
It shouldn't. When we switch your domain to a new website, we only change the records that point to the website and leave your email records (MX, SPF, DKIM and DMARC) untouched. We record all your current settings before any change, so nothing is lost.
How fast will my new website be?
Fast is part of the brief. GoClearcut builds to Google's Core Web Vitals "Good" thresholds on mobile and aims for Lighthouse scores of 90 or above across performance, accessibility, best practices and SEO. Speed matters for visitors, for Google and for AI tools, so it is designed in from the start rather than fixed afterwards.
